Ayda Demirci's Prints

“This series features works created using the techniques of sugar lift, monoprint, and etching. Since etching was a new working method for me, we decided to work in black and keep it monochromatic, also considering the fundamentals of the medium.

 

The first two prints are a pair I planned to have contrasting effects—one light, one dark. The first is a sugar lift print, where I built up layers of tone with a brush on the metal plate; the second, intended to be a single tone, was reproduced as a monoprint by directly applying ink to the metal plate.

 

We also considered how we could incorporate a color other than black into the print. We decided to overprint an etching using a colored plate. By layering red on red, we made the color dominant and rendered the drawing less distinct. This layered structure evoked in me the feeling of observing nature from beneath the surface of water.’’
