Zeynep Beler: The Three-Body Prints

''I grew up seeing early astronomical photographs in my father's old astrophysics books, and would be deeply affected by them. It was as if our inability to photograph space was itself a manifestation of the limits of our understanding. Now we have incredibly detailed, high-resolution images, and while the mystery remains I feel it has partly lost its magic. While producing the plates, we worked with fluid materials like honey and acid that required extensive preliminary experimentation. These processes somewhat recall the experience of analog photography: immersed in emulsions and chemicals, time-bound and prone to error. These editions are also inspired by Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem and Escher's woodcut print titled Phosphorescent Sea. I'm currently drawn to unpredictable processes and mediums. The depiction of indeterminacy in the three-body problem, as fictionalized by Liu Cixin, also somewhat parallels the processes by which these prints came into being.''
